Dorothy G. French age 97 of Zumbrota died on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at the Zumbrota Health Services. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 10:30 AM at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Zumbrota with Pastor Lisa Johnson officiating. Private family burial will be in the Zumbrota Cemetery.
Dorothy Gwen Matchan was born on May 26, 1918 in Zumbrota, MN to George and Clara (nee Korstad) Matchan. She grew up in Zumbrota and graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1936. Dorothy attended Rochester Junior College and graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul. Dorothy continued her education with post-graduate studies from Winona State University and the University of Minnesota. Dorothy taught in several schools in the Zumbrota area for over twenty years.
On June 26, 1949 Dorothy married Hugh A. French in Zumbrota. They made their home in Zumbrota and lived their entire married life in Zumbrota. Dorothy was a longtime member of the First Congregation United Church of Christ where she served as moderator, clerk and church school superintendent. Dorothy was also a member of the Zumbrota Hospital auxiliary and the Esther Chapter #1 of the OES. Dorothy served on the Library board and served as a volunteer at the Zumbrota Nursing Home.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Kristen Matthees of Zumbrota; son, Michael (Jean) French of Gypsum, CO; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh; son, Peter, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, sister, Norma Law and brother, George Matchan.
Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or donor's choice.
