Dorothy Irene Bremer

Dorothy Irene Bremer, 89, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, at her home, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born August 8, 1918, in Plainview Township, Minnesota, to Gustave and Theresa (Naatz) Schmidt. After attending rural school, she graduated from Plainview High School in 1936 and then moved to California where she worked for the president of Bank of America. During the Second World War, she made ship panel parts at Cutler-Hammer Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She married Charles O. Bremer on April 4, 1944, in St. Petersburg, Florida. They later divorced. She was head hostess at the Kahler Hotel in Rochester during the 1950's, co-owner of Bremer's Café in Goodhue during the 1960's, and a head cashier at Erickson Super Fair in Red Wing in the 1970's. She later worked thru Green Thumb at Frontenac State Park, Goodhue County Family Services, and the Goodhue County Historical Society, where she worked until her retirement in 2000. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek, and she enjoyed nature, fishing, sports, cooking, puzzles, TV game shows and family.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra (Gary) Nielsen of Willmar, MN and Phoenix, AZ; one son, Charles Bremer of Red Wing; 7 grandchildren, Aimee (Brian Darling) Nielsen and Brenna (Jeremy) Child of Arlington, VA, Lindsay (Mark Henderson) Bremer of Baltimore, MD, Jorge (Kate) Bremer of Cannon Falls, MN, Todd (Kate) Nielsen of Providence, RI, Adam (Jenn Beyer) Bremer of Las Vegas, NV and Erik (Traci Geller) Nielsen of Brookings, SD; one sister, Lucille (Dale) Roehrich of Wabasha; one sister-in-law, Leona Schmidt of Apple Valley and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Alston, Elmer, Paul and Wilmer Schmidt and one sister, Esther Siebenaler.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hay Creek with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview. Pallbearers will be Todd and Erik Nielsen, Jorge and Adam Bremer, Jeremy Child and Mark Henderson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kate Nielsen, Lindsay Bremer, Brenna Child and Ashley and Aimee Nielsen. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the church and for one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to the church or Hospice. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
