Doris VonBargen

June 16, 1920 — February 9, 2012

Doris Elaine Von Bargen, 91, of Red Wing, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born June 16, 1920 in Ellsworth, Wisconsin to Eugene and Irene (Hutchson) Nadeau. Her family moved to Red Wing when she was a young child and she loved attending school there. Doris married her husband, Vern Von Bargen on June 28, 1941 at the First United Methodist Church in Red Wing. She worked at the Red Wing Shoe Company for five years and also helped with Sunday School and other children's activities at the Methodist Church. Doris later began working as a secretary in the library at Sunnyside School. During this time, she also became the head union negotiator for all the para-professionals in the district. After 15 years with the school district, she retired in 1982.

Doris and Vern loved to travel, taking trips to the Holy Land, China, Europe, the Caribbean and throughout the United States. During their travels she enjoyed taking photos and became a member of the local camera club, often giving slide presentations of their trips. A woman who always kept her hands busy--whether it was in her garden, sewing clothing for her family, making quilts, or baking her often-requested buns, Doris was also known as a very loving and giving woman, especially to her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and its Ruth Circle and she also helped co-ordinate the church rummage sales and funeral lunches.

She is survived by her two children, Dennis (Annette) Von Bargen of Aitkin and Elaine Schumacher of Scandia; four grandchildren, Sarah Von Bargen of St. Paul, Lisa Von Bargen of La Habra, Calif. and Adam and Eric Schumacher both of St. Paul Park; three brothers, Fred (Donna) Nadeau of Mindoro, Wis., LaMoine "Louie" (Marion) Nadeau and Howard Nadeau of both Red Wing and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vern in 1995; two sisters, Audrey (Rolly) Carlson and Grace (James Virgil) Harris and a sister-in-law, Marlene Nadeau.

Fitting to Doris's spirit, her funeral will be held on Valentine's Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Greg Strunk officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, at Mahn Family Funeral Home Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the church.
