OBITUARY: Doris G. Shaler
Memorial services for Doris G. Shaler will be at 1:30p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Lands Lutheran Church with Reverend David Krinke officiating. Honorary casketbearers will be her grandchildren: Ericka Atkinson, Katherine Busby, Hans Anderson, Nicholas Shaler, Sarah Busby and Brandon Nelson. Burial of her cremains will be later at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. Memorials are preferred to Lands Lutheran Church.
Doris Geneva Shaler, age 85, of Zumbrota, died on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. She was born on March 10, 1923 in Roscoe Twnshp., Goodhue Co., MN to Olaf and Selma (Satrum) Hoven. She attended rural school and graduated from Zumbrota High School. Doris drove truck for the United States Army as a civilian and on July 25, 1944, she married Norbert Shaler in Blytheville, AR. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Biloxi, MS while Norb served in the military. They returned to Zumbrota where Doris held numerous jobs including cook at the hospital, working in the pool factory and raising her children and grandchildren. Norb died on January 27, 1993. She was a member of Lands Lutheran Church, serving on various ladies aids. She enjoyed baking, sewing, traveling and visiting with friends and relatives. Doris was "mom" to many, her home a haven to all.
Doris is survived by two sons: James F. Shaler, and special friend, Mary Liffrig, of Rochester, MN, Thomas R. Shaler, and his wife, Gail Pharis, of Minneapolis, MN; four daughters: Carol C. Shaler and Mary E. Shaler, both of San Francisco, CA, Christine M. (David) Busby of Zumbrota, MN, and Martha M. Anderson, of Albuquerque, NM; six grandchildren: Ericka (Corey) Atkinson, Katherine (Emmett Van Gorp) Busby, Hans Anderson, Nicholas (Laurel) Shaler, Sarah (her fiance', Robert Larson) Busby and Brandon Nelson; three great-grandchildren: Amelia, Sylvia and Lydia; one sister, Ruth (Harold) Roitenberg, of Minneapolis, MN. Doris helped raise Ursula (Nicholas) Galanos, of Minneapolis, MN and considered her as another daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norb, six brothers: Clarence, Chester, Obert, Gaylord, Robert and David; three sisters: Gladys, Idella and Charlotte.
Visitation will be one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday.
