Dora Bernice Thompson, 91, of Rochester, died peacefully at her home, March 16, 2017, surrounded by the love of her family. Dora was born October 23, 1925 in Red Wing to Oscar and Alice (Sather) Bjornstad. She graduated from Red Wing High School in 1943. On June 3, 1950 Dora was united in marriage with Bruce Thompson. It was a marriage to last 66 years. The couple resided in Red Wing for a few years before moving to Winona, then to Rochester and Albert Lea. In 1966 they moved back to Rochester and lived in a neighborhood of caring friends for fifty years.
Before her marriage, Dora worked at the telephone company for 10 years. Once she became a mother, her focus was on raising her children. She taught Sunday school, was a Cub Scout Den Mother for her son and a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters. She transitioned back to work as a school crossing guard for the city of Rochester and later to become a parking control officer.
Dora loved her family and friends. She spent her time volunteering at church, knitting, reading and cooking, but her passion was playing golf. At 90 you would find her four days a week on the golf course with dear friends.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce Thompson; son James (Janice) Thompson of Oronoco, MN; daughters, Cindy Kotz of Maple Grove, MN, and Jane Ann (Scott) Valentine of Winchester, VA; 14 loving grandchildren and many great-grandchildren who loved their "Cookie Girl".
Dora was preceded in death by two infant children, Mary and Andrew; her brother Larry Bjornstad ; her sisters Marcella Kempf and Phyllis Beverage.
We will be celebrating her life on Saturday March 25 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Pastor Karna Hagen Moskalik
