Donna Mae Herron

June 5, 1924 — February 13, 2014

Donna Mae Herron, Lake City, passed away February 13, 2014, at the age of 89. She was born in Lake City on June 5, 1924, the only child of Clarence & Mary (Roper) Buck. She grew up in Lake City and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942. As a teenager she loved to roller skate at local rinks. She attended Winona Business School. She worked in Chicago for the US Treasury Dept. War Bond Dept. Steno pool. She moved to Monrovia, California and was an office worker in the Traffic Dept of Day and Night Mfg. Co, which made war supplies for the Navy. Following World War II, she returned to Lake City and was Superintendent Karow's secretary at Lincoln High School.
On October 19, 1946, she and LaVern Herron of Lake City, were married and were blessed with the gift of four children. Following four years of Army service, LaVern worked at the Herron Chevrolet in Lake City, for his father and uncle. In 1970 he and Clifford Sogla bought the car dealership. The business was a family business for over 50 years.
Donna was active in Campfire Girls as a leader and council member and den mother for Boy Scout Troop 94. She and her husband enjoyed being involved in their children's activities at school and church. She had also been an Avon Representative for over 30 years.
She was a lifelong member of St John's Lutheran Church, a member of the Ladies Aid and past member of the Missionary Society and Altar Guild. She was a member of the Lake City Woman's Club and a 65 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and past president. While president she and Agnes Koch of Winona, the national president of Gold Star Mothers, organized the Lake City unit of Gold Star Mother and Wives.
Donna and LaVern enjoyed life together with family, golf, playing cards, snowmobiling, and dancing. Also traveling in their RV and attending auto conventions. Following their retirement they spent winters in Texas and Arizona.
LaVern passed away July 17, 1992. Donna's son Daniel passed away January 29, 2010, at the age of 47, leaving a wife and 3 children.
Donna is survived by three children, Thomas (JacLynn) Herron of New Brighton, Susan Long of Lake City, and Janet (Jim) Schmidt of Lake City; one daughter-in-law, Jean Herron of Appleton, WI; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, son, infant daughter two infant grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
A Celebration of Donna's Life will be held Saturday, February 22nd from 3 to 5 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. A private family burial will be held at St. John's Cemetery at a later date.
