Donald Hilton Smith, age 85, of Red Wing, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was born on May 17, 1928 in Cyrus, MN to George and Gladys (Brown) Smith. Don served in the military from 1948 to 1952. Following his military service, he went to work for Northern States Power (Xcel Energy), where he enjoyed 37 years of employment. He and his wife Joan Vos were married on May 3, 1958. Don was a kind, gentle-spirited man who cherished time with family and friends. He always enjoyed home improvement projects, volunteering at his church, playing cards, relaxing in his recliner, and eating his wife's home-cooked meals. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan; children, Timothy (Lee Ann) Smith, Susan (Brian Lewis) Smith, Thomas Smith, and Lynn (Eric) Blom; and grandchildren, Olivia and David Blom. He is also survived by many brothers-and-sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Wesley, Harvey and Gordon.
Mass of Resurrection will be 11:00 am Monday, April 21, 2014 at the Church of Saint Joseph in Red Wing, with Father Bill Vos presiding. Burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery will follow at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 pm at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Maryknoll Lay Missioners (P.O. Box 307, Maryknoll, NY 10545.).
