Donald Dean Simonson

Donald Dean Simonson, age 85, of Red Wing, died Friday, September 29, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family. He and his twin brother were born June 18, 1932 in Red Wing to Melvin and Taletta (Strand) Simonson. Don met his beautiful wife of 52 years, Delores (Mitzi) Kosec at the ice cream shoppe, Palace of Sweets in Red Wing. They were married July 3, 1953 in the chapel at Christ Episcopal Church. Don and Mitzi raised four children together. His family was his joy and he was a wonderful provider. Don installed flooring for over 40 years for Simonson's Carpet with his brother, Clifford, and nephew, Greg. In 1969, he began at the Red Wing Fire Department and became an EMT on the ambulance service. He had the opportunity to help many people over the 24 years there from delivering babies, to helping rescue stranded hikers and assisting many at car accidents. He grew close to his fellow firemen making lifelong friends. Don was always looking to help others and was a supporter of St. Jude's Hospital for children and the ASPCA to help neglected animals. Don found great enjoyment in boating, petting dogs and spoiling his 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The world was a little brighter with him in it.

He is survived by his four children, Mary (Gary) Coddington, Dean (Megan) Simonson, Sarah (Grant) Peters and Anne (Reese) Meacham all of Red Wing; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother Ronald (Marge) Simonson; brother-in-law, Richard (Carol) Kosec; sister-in-law, Suzanne Simonson all of Red Wing. He was preceded in death by his wife Delores (Mitzi); brother Clifford Simonson; and his parents.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Tristan English officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Goodhue County Humane Society.
