Donald Ray Shaw

Donald Ray Shaw, 85, of Red Wing, MN, formerly of Belmond, Iowa died Thursday, December 19, 2019, at his home in Red Wing. He was born on August 5, 1934, in Belmond to Oscar and Zelda (Hackley) Shaw. He graduated from Clarion High School and then attended Iowa State University. He served in the US Army from 1956-1958, followed by the Army Reserve for six years. On July 22, 1956, he married Mary Luick. They lived in various places in Iowa. Don worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 26 years, as a surveyor and bridge inspector on Interstate 80, a highway engineer, as Creston residency maintenance engineer and for Southwest Iowa District #4. During that time he also worked nine years as Ida County engineer. He received his highway engineer license in 1968 and land surveyor license in 1971. He served on the Iowa highway research board from 1977-1979. Following his retirement he worked for FEMA and delivered Winnebago RV's throughout the United Sates. He was a past president of the Ida Grove Kiwanis Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, coaching, had a keen interest in bridges and also obtained his pilot's license.
Don is survived by his wife, Mary; five children, Kathy (Bruce) Martinson of Northfield, Carl (Sara) Shaw of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Connie Shaw of Red Wing, Daniel Shaw of Poplar Grove, IL and Elizabeth Shaw of Red Wing; four grandchildren, Paul and Laurel Martinson and Charlie and Anna Shaw; one sister, Pat (Harold) Meyer of Bull Head City, AZ and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2020, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Chaplain Debby Bradley officiating. A lunch will follow at the Downtown Plaza on the 9th floor. Instead of memorials, please consider making a donation to the Belmond Historical Society Museum https://belmondmuseum.org/.
