Donald Henry Claus Heins, 88, of Red Wing, died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the Seminary Home. He was born November 10, 1925 in Lake City to Claus and Louise (Tombarge) Heins. He attended parochial school there. After school, he worked on his family's farm. In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during WWII until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Following his service, he married Elizabeth Santelman in Frontenac and the couple had two children. Don continued to farm in the Lake City area until he started working at Independent Grain and Feed in Lake City where he stayed for nearly 13 years. Elizabeth died in 1975. He then began working at Meyer Industries, leaving for a while to manage maintenance at an apartment building in Rochester before returning to Meyer Industries and to the Red Wing area. Later, he was in charge of maintenance for Jordan Towers. In 1984 he married Elaine Siepelmeyer. The couple was married for 21 years, until her passing in 2005. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Red Wing, Lake City VFW post # 8729 and the Leo C. Peterson, American Legion, post #54. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his son, Guy (Virginia) Heins of Red Wing; daughter-in-law, Becky Heins of Lakewood, CO.; sister, Shirley Perkins of Red Wing; four grandchildren, Betsy (Andy) Hines of Red Wing, Sharon (Matt) Moritz of Red Wing, Guy "Brad" Heins of Moscow, IA and Jason Heins of Lakewood, CO; three great grandchildren, Jospeh, Andrew and Patrick Hines; and special friend, Betty Ryan of Red Wing; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty; his wife, Lois Goranson; his wife, Mary Krause and his wife, Elaine; son, Thomas; siblings, Dorothy Bonde, Robert and Dallas Heins.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, March 17, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing, with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be at Frontenac Cemetery with military honors provided by the Leo C. Peterson, American Legion, Post #54. A visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, March 16th, 2014 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church.
