Donald Arthur Carlson

Donald Arthur Carlson, 92 of Red Wing, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at his home at Deer Crest. Donald was born July 21, 1919 in Red Wing, the son of Arthur and Tevie (Peterson) Carlson. He grew up in the Welch area and graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1938. He married Jeanette Johnson on October 6, 1945. He was a lifelong farmer in Welch Township. Donald was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church where he served as treasurer and was also the Clerk of Welch Township for many years. Donald enjoyed World History and traveling to Europe, where he and Jeanette made several trips. Don biked the Cannon River Trail until he was 88. He also attended the Minnesota State Boys Basketball Tournament from 1953-2010 never missing a tournament.

Donald is survived by his daughter, Gwen (Stuart Beattie) Carlson of Minneapolis; granddaughter Lydia Beattie; sister Gene (Kennard) LeClaire of Rochester; many nieces and nephews; and many friends in Welch and Red Wing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; parents, brother Wayne Carlson, and step-granddaughter Carey Beattie.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m., Monday November 14, 2011 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Welch with Reverend Bob Albing officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and also for one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church or the Goodhue County Historical Society.
