Donald H. Atkinson age 66 of Rochester passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the Maple Manor Care Center. A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island with Chaplain Kelly Adelson of Heartland Hospice officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, November 21, 2011.
Donald Harold Atkinson was born on January 17, 1945 in New Haven Township, Olmsted County, MN to Harold and Mavis M. (nee Stafford) Atkinson. He grew up in rural Pine Island and graduated from Mazeppa High School in 1963. On February 15, 1965 Donald entered the U. S. Army. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1968. After his discharge he returned to the Oronoco area and started attending Rochester Vo-Tech for automotive repair. On June 15, 1976 he re-entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on March 14, 1979. He worked for Hy-Vee, the Kahler Hotel and held several other jobs over the years.
Donald was a member of Eagles Aeries Lodge in Rochester and Swanson-Owens VFW Post #9647 in Oronoco. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing bingo.
Donald is survived by his mother, Mavis Atkinson of Pine Island, special friend Betsy Carney of Pine Island, brothers, Richard (Joann) Atkinson of Zumbrota, Daryl (Bonnie) Atkinson of Duluth; sister, Judy (Wilfred) Zeman of Glenflora, WI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Eagles Cancer Telethon.
