Donny "Wicker" Pick passed away September 17, 2011, at HCMC in Minneapolis surrounded by his family. He was born January 21, 1935, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Don lived a wonderful life and was taken to our Lord too soon.
He loved sports and was an avid Packer and Badger fan. Despite being diagnosed with polio his sophomore year, Don excelled in football, basketball, and baseball for the Jefferson High Eagles in Jefferson, Wisconsin.
Don married his high school sweetheart, Eileen Hefke on May 19, 1956, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Jefferson, Wisconsin. That same year he graduated from UW-Whitewater with a BA in Education. He was a math teacher at North Technical College in Wausau, Wisconsin for 25 years, retiring in 1990. Don and Eileen loved Wausau and raised four beautiful daughters; Deborah, Cynthia, Amy, and Beth. They moved to Barrett, Minnesota in 1990 and began a wonderful 21 years of retirement as snowbirds. More recently they resided in Red Wing, Minnesota.
An aortic dissection in 2007 took a toll on Don, but his incredible sense of humor, positive personality, unconditional love for his family and the complete and utter joy brought to him by his grandchildren helped him prevail. Don had his second major open heart surgery in June 2011 at Mayo and once again became a "miracle man". Two weeks ago Don was given the okay to golf again, which had been a yearlong goal (yes, he was a good golfer too!). The good Lord had other plans for him, on Saturday, September 17, 2011 his loving family said goodbye to the best husband, father, grandpa, and friend. IT'S BEEN A GREAT RIDE, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
Don is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eileen; daughters, Deborah (Gerry) Nelson of Barrett, MN, Cindie (Bob) Johnson of Hoffman, MN, Amy (Marty) Banker of Elk River, MN, and Beth (Tim) Bowes of Red Wing, MN; grandchildren, Jack Banker, Emily Banker, Anna Bowes and Tabetha Bowes; and brothers Bill Pick and Jim (Carol) Pick. He is preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Anna (Braun) Pick; sister Betty; sister-in-law Alice; and brother-in-law Bob.
A Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2011 with visitation one hour prior at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, 602 Plum Street; Red Wing, MN 55066. A reception will follow at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used to establish a scholarship fund for school aged athletes.
