Detlef Emil Bordthauser, 91, of Red Wing, died Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Preferred Senior Living in Ellsworth. He was born on August 12, 1929, in Buxtehude, Germany to Emil and Johanne (Kraft) Bordthauser. He attended schools in Germany. On September 12, 1952, he married Anita Aldag in Germany and they moved to the United States in 1952. He worked for SB Foot Tannery for a number of years and then for Central Research Laboratories retiring in the 1990's. Anita died on October 28, 2002. Detlef met June Olson in 2003 at the Senior Dance at the Elks in Red Wing. They Exchanged vows of Commitment at United Lutheran Church on July 17, 2004. They lived in Red Wing prior to moving to Ellsworth.
Detlef was a member of First Covenant Church. He enjoyed playing the accordion and violin, sharing his musical talents for special events and at assisted living and nursing homes in the area. Being as he liked bicycling, he would often bike the Cannon Valley Trail, where he would also play his accordion at the Welch Station. He was very proud of his German heritage and you would often see him wearing his lederhosen and Bavarian hat.
Detlef is survived by June Olson of Ellsworth; three sons, Reynold (Karol) Bordthauser of Ojibwa, WI., Walter Bordthauser of Red Wing and Milton Bordthauser of Rochester; five grandchildren, Paige (Brandon) Archer, Lindsey Bordthauser, Karl (Brandolyn) Bordthauser, Carissa Bordthauser and Ian Bordthauser; five great grandchildren, Mateo and Selah Archer, Addisyn Bordthauser and Roya and Ryker Bordthauser. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anita, of 50 years, and one sister, Helga Andreschefski of Canada.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2020, at First Covenant Church with Reverend Ken Larson officiating. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Face masks and social distancing are required. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
