Delwin Larry Cook

October 18, 1942 — March 17, 2023

Red Wing

Delwin Larry Cook, 80, of Red Wing, died Friday, March 17, 2023 at his home in Red Wing. He was born October 18, 1942 in Grand Rapids, Minn. to Clarence and Doris (Brown) Carlson.  He was later adopted by Donald Cook of Ellsworth after Clarence died when Delwin was young. He graduated from Ellsworth High School where he was the captain of the school’s first wrestling team. He went on to study at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls and then to Northwest Technical College where he studied drafting. While in school he met and married Sharon (Cherry) Plante and the couple raised 3 children. They later divorced. In 1984 he met Beverly Lundquist. Together they had one daughter. While they never married, they lived happily together until her passing in 2009. Delwin did drafting work designing equipment for John Deere until mobility issues in his hands forced him to change careers. He then worked for Roto-Rooter as a technician for more than 40 years. He retired in 2004.

Delwin enjoyed the outdoors. He loved fishing, hiking and camping where he would entertain his family around the campfire by playing the harmonica and the guitar at the same time. Yearly, he took his wife and children to the Minnesota State Fair, excited to show them the newest machine designs. He liked to watch old westerns like Gunsmoke, How the West was Won, and episodes of Bonanza. Not to be confined to a single genre, he also enjoyed watching football and the original series of Star Trek.  But most of all, Delwin looked forward to time spent with his family.

He is survived by his children, Shalaine Cook, Delwin (Deb) Cook II, Marcus (Heather) Cook, and Sarah (Peter) Hillesheim; two grandchildren, Jonathan DePiro and Dominic Hillesheim; siblings, Terri Meyers, Gary Gordon, Donna Olufson, Lana Nelson, Mary Cook and Gale Cook.

He is preceded in death by his two infant sons with Beverly, Michael and Matthew Cook; siblings, Chenoa Beyers, Eugene Cook and Dean Cook; and his parents.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Trimbelle Cemetery in Ellsworth, Wisconsin in the spring. Online condolences may be left for his family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
