Deane Alexander Haller

Deane Alexander Haller, age 93, of Red Wing, died at Valentine Senior Living Center in Red Wing, Minnesota on November 22, 2013. The son of Adolph and Della (née Rhoney) Haller, he was born on March 23, 1920 in Arnegard, North Dakota. He moved to Red Wing Minnesota with his family in 1922. He was educated in public schools there, graduating from Red Wing High School in 1938. In January 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving the Corps of Engineers in the Philippines and Japan, and rising to the rank of Master Sergeant by the time of his discharge in February 1946. He moved with his brother Lyndon to Los Angeles in January 1947. Soon after, he visited his brother Forrest in Palm Springs and worked at the Plaza Theater there. He also worked at a restaurant in Lake Arrowhead. He attended Pasadena City College for two years. Later, he was employed by Air Research Manufacturing and the Southern California Gas Company. In 1961, he returned to Red Wing to join his mother and stepfather. He was employed by the Daily Republican Eagle newspaper and Jostens, Inc. For some years during the 1920's, he lived at the Vasa Children's Home at Vasa and later at Burnside. He was a long-time member of the First Lutheran Church of Red Wing. He never married.

He is survived by two nephews, Terry Haller of Madison, Wisconsin and Michael Haller of Salem, Oregon and one grandnephew, Christopher Haller of Portland, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his father, Adolph Haller in 1940, his stepfather Fred Gerdes in 1964, his mother Della (Rohney) Gerdes in 1972 and his three brothers, Lyndon Haller (Lela) in 1999, Forrest Haller (Topsy) in 2008 and Donald Haller in 2010.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Valentine Senior Living Center for their loving and faithful care of Deane during his years of stay there. A funeral service will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeremy Nausin officiating. Burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military honors provided by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, Post #54. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church.
