Dean Arland Shelstad

A memorial service for Dean "Deano" Shelstad will be held Wednesday September 8th at 11:00 AM at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa. The Reverend Alan Horn will officiate. Inurnment, at a later date, will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Military honors at the church will be provided by the Honor Guard of the Mazeppa branch of the American Legion, and further honors will be provided at the cemetery by the Fort Snelling Rifle Squad. He will also be honored by the Patriot Guard. Mr. Shelstad, 44, of Mazeppa, died Friday September 3, 2010 as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Wabasha County.

Dean Arland Shelstad was born November 28, 1965 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and at the age of 3 he was adopted by Arland and Gail Shelstad. He was a graduate of Mazeppa High School, Class of 1984. He entered the U.S. Army, and served from 1984 to 1991. Honorably discharged, he returned to Minnesota. On October 11, 1986 he married Marianne Ronningen and they were later divorced. He married Diane Gertner on January 11, 1996 and they were later divorced as well. Deano was employed at Weis Builders for many years, and recently was working for Graham Group Construction. He was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa. Other memberships included Local 405, a labor union, and he was also a member of the Mazeppa American Legion and its Honor Guard. He enjoyed camping, fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Danielle (Zack Reniker) Shelstad of Hayfield, and Meaghan Shelstad of Kasson; and his father, Arland (Madelyn) Shelstad of Pine Island. Also surviving are a stepdaughter, Amy (Billy) Henderson and a stepson, Lee Gertner, both of Zumbrota; a granddaughter, Madyson Reniker; and step-grandchildren, Brenden Holmes-Gertner, Logan Holmes-Gertner, and Makenzie Gertner; sisters, Dee Dee (Tim) Stahman of Mazeppa, and Dawn Shelstad of Rochester, Debbie Tincher of Richmond, Kentucky, Diane (Bruce) Johnson of Cut Bank, Montana, Denette (Kyle) Braxton of Great Falls, Montana, and DelMarie (Mike) Warburton of Tampa, Florida. Additionally, his biological parents, 8 biological sisters, and a biological brother survive, all in Canada.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gail Shelstad; a brother-in-law, John Tincher; and a nephew, John Wilgus Arland Tincher.

A visitation with no reviewal will be held Tuesday September 7th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
