David Alan Shoff, age 60, of Rochester, Minnesota, formerly Albert Lea died on December 27, 2024, with his spouse and child by his side, at home in Rochester, from a battle with cancer. David was born on May 31, 1964, to Dr. Niles Rodell Shoff and Oral Irene (Larson) Shoff and was the seventh of eight born in the family. David always felt to have had the best siblings he could have.
David graduated from Albert Lea Central High School in May of 1982. He attended Austin Community College (now Riverland Community College), then transferred to Bemidji State University, where he graduated in May of 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He also passed the C.P.A. examination in May of 1986. In September of 1987 David graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California with his M.B.A. concentrated in Finances.
David spent over 25 years in hospitality, the vast majority managing and consulting with the hotel industry. Many who worked with him became lifelong friends and he encouraged their pursuit of education, and better opportunities, "find your passion and embrace it," he would tell people.
In April of 2007, David married Laurie Olson. They lived in Albert Lea until 2018 when they moved to Rochester. David left hotels in the Summer of 2024. In 2011, David and Laurie welcomed Peter, their only son and child. Peter and David developed such a close bond, the two were inseparable, promising to be present every day possible, David fulfilled that oath and the two became two peas in a pod. He enjoyed reading about history, writing fictional thriller novels, traveling to Gopher football games for the past 50 years, coin collecting, and traveling with Laurie and Peter to France, London, Rome, and the Disney Parks.
David is survived by six siblings: Greg (Sally) Shoff, Susan (Mike) Zmyslony, Cindy (Rick) Steinberg, Laura (Steve Hansen) Brink, Michael Shoff, and Christopher (Amanda) Shoff, plus numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Brad. Funeral services will be at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea on January 21, 2024, at 11 am. Visitation with family will take place one hour before the service. There will be no streaming.
The family would like to acknowledge the services of Mayo Clinic Hospice in Rochester. Thank you to Laurie's colleagues and leadership from the virtual nursing department and Domitilla 6D at Mayo Clinic for their support and making accommodations in the work schedule to provide his care at home. Moreover, the help from Mrs. Ruth Strasser and his sister Susan, who both stepped in to help, brother Michael, who made adjustments on the house to make the home more accessible and the Rochester Central Lutheran School for not only helping the family, but by supporting Peter as well.
