David Edward Schmidt, 77, of Lake City, passed away Monday, February 3,2025 at Mayo Health Systems, Lake City, Minn.
He was born on May 10th, 1947 in Wabasha, Minn. to Clarence and Marcella (Loechler) Schmidt. He attended Pepin Hill School, St Felix grade school and graduated from Wabasha High School-Class of 1965. On October 21,1967 he married Barbara Chasteen at St Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha.
Dave and Barb are long- time residents of the Lake City area. Dave left home at the age of 16 and began working for Dick Sprick at Bar S Herefords rural Lake City. He was a former employee of Di Acro, the flour mill and Federal Mogul in Lake City. He retired in January of 2015 and shortly thereafter began a 10-year battle with pleomorphic lipo-sarcoma.
Dave was an avid golfer, taking up the sport at the age of 40. A member of Lake City Golf, he had 3 holes in one-two occurring on his birthday. After retirement he enjoyed playing Cribbage and Euchre on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings at the VFW. He also loved playing poker. He enjoyed listening to classic country and music of the 50's and 60's. His favorites "Why Me Lord" by Kris Kristofferson and "The Wanderer" by Dion. Computer games, fill in puzzle books and jigsaw puzzles were also his favorites. He was also a proud supporter of his grandchildren's sports and other activities.
He is survived by his wife, Barb, of 57 years; two sons, Dean (Veena Nayer), and Mike (Theresa) both of Lake City; one daughter, Jennefer(Richard) Baer also of Lake City; 7 grandchildren, Nate and Nora Baer, Kaitlin Schmidt, Sami (John) Hinck, Megan Bartlett, Kim (Ryan Westphal) Baer, and Megan Nayer; 4 great grandchildren, Calie Dohrn, Brayden and Brittyn Hinck, and Cooper Westphahl; brothers, Dennis(Mary) Schmidt of Hastings, Minn., Bob (Michelle Fore) of Shakopee, Minn., Allyn Schmidt of Palm Desert, Cal., Ed (Shelley) of Rochester, Minn., and John Schmidt of Lake City.; two sisters, Carol (Lowell) Holmgren of Lake City; and Connie (Mike) Kubista of Lake City; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends .
Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry; 2 brothers and 1 sister in infancy; nieces, Sheila (Schmidt) Sobiech, and Tina Schmidt; and great-grandson, Cullen Hinck. He was a parishioner of St Mary's of the Lake in Lake City, where services will be held.
A memorial Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m., Friday, February 14, 2025 at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church in Lake City. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday, February 13, 2025 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church.
