David J. Barnes

October 2, 1930 — April 20, 2015

David James Barnes, age 84, of Red Wing died Monday, April 20, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems - Red Wing. He was born on October 2, 1930 in Blue Earth to Clifford and Alice (Thomas) Barnes. He attended schools in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. In 1948 he was married to Beryl Bencker. They moved to Red Wing in 1954, where David worked for Anderson Sheet Metal for a number of years. He then purchased , owned and operated Barnes Sheet Metal until 1995 when he retired. He was a past member of the Jaycees and their Clown Club, and the Red Wing Elks BPOE# 845. In his heyday he enjoyed good music, cooking, boating, fishing, hunting, water skiing, biking, camping, a good martini (or two) and "walking and dancing with momma". He had music in his soul and a heart full with his grandchildren's love. When they'd visit, you'd often see him on the floor playing with his great grandchildren. If you met him on the street you'd appreciate his smile, laughter and a good long story. David was the "Tin Man".
He is survived by his wife, Beryl; son, David E. (Josie) Barnes of Susanville, CA; daughter, Colleen Anderson of Red Wing and Bruce Anderson; five grandchildren, Travis (Ann) Anderson, Melissa Murphy, Sam Anderson, Jessie (Kevin) Barnes, and Casey (Melinda) Barnes; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Tom (Elaine) Barnes of Red Wing; and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of David's life will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Red Wing Elks Club. A private burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
