Darrel "Itch" or "Huffer" D. Jonas, of Goodhue, died peacefully surrounded by family, on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. He was born Oct. 9, 1935 in Red Wing to Rudolph and Helen (Kruger) Jonas. His family moved to Goodhue shortly after he was born and he remained a lifelong resident. He joined the US Army in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1957. He was employed at the RW Shoe Company for 42 years, retiring in 1994. He was a fireman for the Goodhue Fire Department for 21 and also a memeber of the American Legion Post 598 in Bellechester and St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Goodhue. Darrel enjoyed tinkering with old tractors, lawnmowers and automobiles. He put on many miles to check things out, sightsee and visit family and friends. He also enjoyed riding with his trucker friends. His most frequent stop was to Doc Sawyer's round table and Hager Heights Drive-In. He was a wonderful conversationalist and he also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by one sister, Deloris Ringeisen of Belvidere Mills; special friend of 50 years, Alice Dahle of Morristwon, Minn. and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Robert; twin brother, Dale and a sister, MaryAnn McGinnis.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Goodhue, with Reverend Michael Gustafson officiating. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
