Damon Kale Aukema, 62, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 1, 1953 in Madison to Richard & Murtice (Swanson) Aukema. Because his father was a pastor, Damon grew up and lived in various places. However, during his high school years he was greatly influenced by his father's work in the Civil Rights Movement in Milwaukee. Damon graduated from Riverside High School in Milwaukee in 1971. Following high school he attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and went on to become the day treatment director for Barron County. He later was called into the ministry and he attended Golden Gate Seminary. Damon met Janice Carlsen in Portland, Oregon. They were united in marriage on May 21, 1983 and then moved to Lyle, MN where Damon was a minister for the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. In the early 90's they moved to Red Wing where he was a part-time minister. He later returned to social work and was a program counselor for Lutheran Social Services.
His family referred to Damon as a gentleman scholar, both because he was a gentle man and a scholar. He loved to read and study, particularly theology and philosophy. He was gifted with a talent for language and had a passion for translating Swedish & Norwegian poetry. He had some of his translations published in literary journals including the Great River Review. He loved the outdoors, walking, canoeing, cross country skiing and camping. However, his greatest joy was his children.
He is survived by his wife, Jan of Red Wing; son, Justin Aukema of Tokyo, Japan; daughter, Kari Aukema of Roseville; parents, Richard & Murtice Aukema of Red Wing; brother, Brent (Julie) Aukema of Ironwood, Michigan; nieces, Snow and Lacy Aukema; as well as other family and many friends.
