Dale Robert Schillinger, 79, of Red Wing, died Thursday at Lake City Medical Center. He was born February 4, 1929 in Conata, South Dakota to Clifford and Helen (Orr) Schillinger. He grew up in Hayfield, Minnesota and joined the US Air Force in June of 1948 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1952. He worked as an auto mechanic at various locations until 1972 when he began working full-time at Fort Snelling with the Army Reserves as an auto mechanic. He retired in February of 1989. He enjoyed racing cars and had driven in the Daytona 500; he also enjoyed bowling and hunting and was a member of the Hayfield American Legion.

He is survived by a special friend, Esabelle Stone of Red Wing; two sons, Robert (Mayumi) Schillinger of Kansas City, Missouri and William (Denise) Schillinger of Swanville, Minnesota; daughter, Cindy Smith of Hastings; brother, Richard (Beverly) Schillinger of Fridley, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Schillinger.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with military honors performed by the Hayfield American Legion. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be Tuesday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert, William, Donald, Daniel and Jeffrey Schillinger, and Jason and Alex Smith.
