Dale Roy

Dale D. Roy, 84, of Rochester, died Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at Rochester Health and Rehab East. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Rochester with the Rev. Norman W. Wahl officiating. Interment will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Mount Hope Lutheran Cemetery in St. James, Minnesota with Rev. Susan Engholm officiating. Military honors will be provided by the St. James Honor Guard. Casketbearers will be James, John, Jeffrey and Jeremy Chesney, Steve, Scott and Keith Menne. Dale D. Roy was born April 30, 1922 in Jeffers, Minnesota to Calvin and Edna (Willard) Roy. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and served for four years in the Asiatic Pacific during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. Dale married Betty Berg on October 2, 1946. The couple and their daughters moved to Rochester in 1956, where Dale worked as an engineer and department manager for IBM for over 27 years. After retirement, he taught problem solving and decision making classes at various IBM locations. Dale and Betty resided at Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James from 2003 to April of 2006, when they moved back to Rochester. Dale was an active member of the community, belonging to the Kiwanis and Elks Club. He was involved in Explorer Scouts, Community Food Response and the IBM Quarter Century Club. Dale also participated in the Rochester Area Churches Emergency Response team, helping victims of the 1978 flood. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent and fund raiser leader for the Samaritan Nursing Home Capital Campaigns. Dale loved to golf and was an avid bowler in the IBM Watson Leagues. With his family, he enjoyed fishing and boating at the North Spot Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Betty of Rochester; two daughters, Diane (Allan) Eisenman of CA and Denette (David) Chesney of Rochester; four grandsons, James, Jeremy and Jeff (Kelsey) Chesney all of Rochester and John (Jody) Chesney of St. Charles, MN; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marlys (Don) Sorenson of Storden, MN, Lavonne (Keith) Nimerfro of Minneapolis, Delores (Larry) Seldon of Minneapolis and Arlene (Howard) Kussman of Estherville, IA; two brothers, Gordon (Beverly) Roy of Mankato, MN and Garold (Joan) Roy of Carlyle, Saskatchewan, Canada. Dale was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Walter and Robert Roy and two sisters, Margaret Schnell and Marion Kussman. Arrangements are with Mahn Family Funeral Home-Rochester Chapel.
