Dale M. Ayen

Dale M. Ayen, age 89, of Zumbrota, died on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. He was born on October 13, 1923, in Woonsocket Township, Sanborn County, SD, to Marvin and Margaret (Kruse) Ayen. Dale was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek. On November 8, 1944 he married Audrey E. Holst at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. The couple farmed from 1944 - 1956, Dale then worked in road construction for four years, Zumbrota schools for twenty-five years as a custodian, and after retiring he continued to drive school bus for over ten years. In his earlier years Dale enjoyed camping, bowling, and playing softball. He also enjoyed woodworking, collecting toys for his toy collection, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dale was a member of the Lions Club in Zumbrota, and Christ Lutheran Church where he participated in the church council.

Dale is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, Norman (Judy) Ayen of Baltimore, MD, Howard (Mary) Ayen of Zumbrota; son-in-law, Steve Engh of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Patricia (Heath) Oeltjen, Kyle Ayen, Kathy (Jeff) Higgins, Caaren (Jason) Mathiowetz, Kirsten (David) Gaskin, Cindy (Jeff) Tupper, Derek Engh, Karla (Michael) Bandemer, Jessica (Tony) Cole; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Dale was preceded in death by his daughter, Kay Engh; three sisters; and one brother.

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor Wayne Schoch officiating. Burial will be in the Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
