Curtis Lawrence LaMont

Curtis Lawrence LaMont, 82, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at his home. He was born December 15, 1933 in Elysian Township, LeSueur County, Minnesota to Lawrence and Lucile (Sperl) Lamont. He grew up in Elysian and attended country school there. He attended Waterville High School and went on to receive his teaching degree from Mankato State University. He later received a master's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught elementary school in Clarks Grove, Min. and in Allentown, Penn. before going on to teach children on a U.S. Air Force base in Wiesbaden, Germany. He later returned to Red Wing where he taught at Sunnyside and Burnside Elementary schools, retiring from Burnside in 1988. In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, particularly cultivating roses. He was a gourmet cook and excellent baker. He also loved to draw and design and he even designed the layout for his own duplex. He was a gentle soul who loved Siamese cats and at one time kept more than 20 large aquariums of unique fish. He was passionate about bingo and would often play twice a day. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and an active delegate for the Democratic Party.
He is survived by two sisters, Shirley (Tom) Krenik of Elysian, Minn. and Ruth (John) Jansen of Brainerd, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Theresa (Randy) Mees of Madison, Wis., Angel (Dan) Oehrlein of Garrison, Minn., Michael Howard of Snowflake, Ariz. , Sharry Lorenzi of Chisago City, Minn., Clarissa Lamont of Brooklyn Center, Bobbi Jo Lamont of Brainerd, and several grand nieces and nephews; one step-niece and three step nephews; cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles.
Private family burial will be at a later date at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Elysian, Minnesota. Online condolences may be sent to www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com. Memorials are preferred to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, COPD Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.
