Covel "Sonny" H. Dankers, 83 of Red Wing, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 20, 1940, in Lake City, MN, to John Dankers and Evelynn Engelman. Sonny graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959 before beginning his career with Red Wing Shoe Company. After 43 dedicated years, he retired as a supervisor in 2000. Sonny married the love of his life, Lenore Reinier, in the summer of 1969 and together the two have enjoyed 54 years of marriage together. After they both retired from working, they began spending their winters in Tucson, Arizona, where both enjoyed their time in the warm south.
Sonny cherished his role as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family meant the world to him, and he found great joy from spending time with each member, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who often referred to him as "The Great One." He took great pride in witnessing their accomplishments and nurturing their growth.
Outside of his family, Sonny had several interests that brought him happiness throughout his life. He found peace in the serenity of fishing and had many memorable fish stories. As an avid sports enthusiast, he followed the Minnesota Vikings (though they usually did not bring him peace), Minnesota Twins, and the Golden Gophers. Whether it was cheering from home or attending games with friends, Sonny was always engaged with his favorite teams.
Sonny is survived by his beloved wife, Lenore of Red Wing; children, Scott (Jolene) King of Red Wing, Greg (Sue) King of Rochester, Dori (Scott) Mann of Red Wing, Jay Dankers of Red Wing, and Rob (Cayla) Dankers of Red Wing; grandchildren, Tracy Meche, Ashley Link, Trisha Allhiser, Chad King, Paige Bremer, Brianna Dankers, Carson Dankers, and Natalie Dankers and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Kathrine Moorehouse and Vernetta "Tootie" Hogan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing with a visitation one hour prior to the service. A reception will be held at the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54, 218 West 4th St., Red Wing, immediately following the service.
