Chester D. "Chet" Nord, age 80, of Zumbrota died on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at his home in Zumbrota. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, May 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor Tom Isaacson officiating. Burial will be in Zumbrota Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Stary-Yerka VFW Post #5727 and the Mazeppa Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service at the church. A celebration of life will follow the service at the Zumbrota VFW from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Chester Duane Nord was born on October 6, 1930 in Wanamingo, MN to Alvin and Florence (nee Ronningen) Nord. His family moved around as Chet was growing up and he attended many different schools. On March 9, 1948 he entered the United States Air Force. He was stationed in England with the 8th Air Force and participated in the Berlin Air Lift. After his honorable discharge on December 16, 1949 he returned to the Wanamingo area. He was united in marriage to Vivian M. Stockmo on May 26, 1951 in Wanamingo. They farmed in rural Zumbrota until 1973. In 1974 they purchased the International Harvester Dealership in Zumbrota. They ran the dealership together until retiring in 1985. Vivian died on August 13, 2010. Chester was a life member of the Stary-Yerka VFW Post #5727 in Zumbrota and was a past Commander. He enjoyed all sports, golfing, traveling, joining his friends at the VFW for morning coffee, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Chet is survived by his sons, Bradley (Cheryl) Nord and Michael (Sandra) Nord, both of Zumbrota; daughters, Teresa (Daniel) Grantham of Hartfield, VA and Tamara (Steve) Sawyer of Plainview; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, brother, Gary (June) Nord of Goodhue
Chet was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian; son, Jon; brother, Lynn; and parents, Alvin & Florence Nord.
Memorials are preferred to United Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Zumbrota VFW.
Arrangements are with the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota.
