Red Wing

Cheryl Kay Hemphill, 63, of Red Wing MN, died unexpectedly on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at her home.  She was born on July 25, 1957, in St. Paul MN to Melvin and Gail (Andersen) Muhlhausen.  She moved with her family to Red Wing in 1972.  She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1975 and then attended Gustavus Adolphus College.  She returned to Red Wing where she worked for various restaurants and health care providers. She married Donald Hemphill.  They later divorced.  She was a gifted musician playing the piano and flute.  For many years she gave music lessons to piano, flute & piccolo students and played for many church services, funerals and weddings at area churches.  Over the years she would play for productions at the Red Wing, Lake City, and Goodhue Schools and the Sheldon Theatre.  Cheryl was also a much sought-after accompanist.  She was always willing to help out, even if a musician was needed at the last minute.  She also enjoyed cooking and baking and will especially be remembered for her pans of bars.

Cheryl is survived by her two sons, Sam (Debbie) Hemphill and Izaac Hemphill all of Red Wing; six grandchildren, Taya Lewis of Red Wing, Mac Smirnov of River Falls WI, Jaydon, Jacob, Janessa and Janaya Hemphill of Bay City WI; her mother, Gail Muhlhausen of Red Wing; two sisters, Sandra (George Stewart, Jr.) Muhlhausen of South St. Paul MN and Nancy (Mike Trudell) Bystrom of Ellsworth WI and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin Muhlhausen, and former husband, Donald.

Private family services will be held at Bethel Covenant Church of Ellsworth WI with Reverend Todd Spieker officiating.   The service will be live streamed on the church’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/bethelcovenantchurch  at 11 am Friday, December 18, 2020.   Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery, Red Wing MN. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
