Charles Weick

Pine Island

Chuck Weick was born in 1925 at home in Traverse County Minnesota to Mike and Beulah Weick. He was the oldest of seven children. In 1938 He graduated 8th grade at Golden Prairie School in Big Stone County. He worked with his father milking cows and raising crops in that area. At age 19, he began serving in the Army during World War II in the Military Police. During that time in 1946 he was an honorary guard at the Japanese War Crimes Trials in Tokyo and stood guard over Tojo, prime minister of Japan. He left the Army for a period of time on a hardship discharge due his father experiencing medical problems. He later re-entered the Army and served the remainder of his enlistment in the Korean Conflict. Upon honorable discharge in 1954, he farmed with his father for a period of time. He then worked as an operator of an ore boat loader at the Silver Bay Reserve Mining Company. In 1956, he was in a serious automobile accident resulting in a broken back and skull fracture. Following a long period of rehabilitation in a body cast, he then attended Electronics School at Austin Vocational School on the G. I. Bill. Following graduation from Electronics School, he was employed as a technician at Phil’s Fix-All in Rochester. He then began employment as a serviceman for Sears & Roebuck for 30 plus years before retiring. Later in life, bowling provided the opportunity for him to meet his future wife, Evelyn Helen Rollie. They were married August 17, 1974 and were married for 45 years. Upon their marriage he moved to Evelyn’s farm and farmed while working at Sears. Charles enjoyed fishing, farming, bowling, and fixing almost anything. But most of all he enjoyed visiting. He was known by his friends, neighbors and relatives as honest, warm and caring. He loved life and especially enjoyed mowing the big farm yard on his beloved John Deere Mower with the help of his stepdaughter, Judy Rollie. He also enjoyed surveying the area around the farm on his ATV to make sure the crops were planted right. Charles was a loving son, husband, brother and a true patriot who maintained membership in the American Legion and VFW. Charles was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was an usher along with his wife for many years.
