Charles "Chuck" Leon Mathiowetz, 84, of Red Wing, died Sunday, August 23, 2020, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 9, 1936, in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, to Wendelin and Rose (Nachreiner) Mathiowetz. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1954. He worked as a mechanic for the John Deere tractor and implement dealership in Morgan, Minnesota, and then as a maintenance technician for Kraft Foods in New Ulm, Minnesota. On September 27, 1960, he was united in marriage to Iris Dietz in New Ulm. They moved to Red Wing in April of 1965 where they opened a GTC Auto Parts store. They owned and operated stores in Red Wing and River Falls, Wisconsin, until 1969. After selling the businesses, he then began working for Central Research Laboratories in Red Wing as a service representative, retiring in 1998. Through his position at Central Research, he and his family were able to travel extensively throughout the United States. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph, Knights of Columbus, Phantoms Motor Club, Horseless Carriage Club of America, Antique Automobile Club of America, and the Red Wing Yacht Club. He greatly enjoyed polka music and dancing and was a part of the Czech Area Concertina Club. Chuck had an interest in history and was very artistic and especially liked to work with his hands, whether building or restoring things. He had a close bond with his parrot, Buddy, and he loved attending his children's and grandchildren's events locally and internationally.
He is survived by his wife, Iris, of nearly 60 years; son, Keith (Debra Schellin) of Scandinavia, WI; daughter, Charlene (Peter) Dudley of Red Wing; granddaughters, Heide (Jeff Hochhausen) Dudley of Cassville, WI and Inga Dudley of Brownsdale, MN; brother, Robert (Irene) Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye, MN; brother-in-law, Daniel (Bernice) Dietz of New Ulm, MN; many nieces and nephews and his parrot, Buddy.
