Caroll Sperger

Caroll Joseph Sperger, 94, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Deer Crest in Red Wing. He was born on December 25, 1915, in Eau Galle Township, Dunn County, Wis., to Albert and Mary (Lecheler) Sperger. He attended Chase Hill School in Dunn County and then worked on a dairy farm near Goodhue until 1940. He then went to work for Reichert Bottling Company in Red Wing. On July 12, 1941 he married Marcella Windhorst. In 1943 he joined the US Navy and served on board the USS Irwin in the Pacific during World War II. After he was honorably discharged, he worked for a furniture factory in Los Angeles and in 1950 moved back to Red Wing where he and his wife owned and operated Sperger's Upholstering. Marcella died May 2, 2001. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing cards and being with his family.
He is survived by two brothers, Herbert (Maria) Sperger of Roslyn, Pennsylvania and Albert (Beth) Sperger of Eau Claire, Wisc; sister, Lyn Paradise of Minneapolis, Minn. and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, George and Bernard "Bud" Sperger and two sisters, Joan Shafer and Sister Mary Jean "Bernie" Sperger.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2009 at St. John's Lutheran Church with Reverend Loren Lucht officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors by Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials are preferred to the Honor Flight.
