Carol Jean Thompson, age 75, of St. Charles, MN, formerly of Rochester, died Monday (June 3, 2013) at Olmsted Medical Center Hospital in Rochester.
Carol Jean Preuss was born May 4, 1938 in Maddock, ND to William and Katherine (Akerberg) Preuss. She took her first and only airplane ride at the tender age of one, flying to Bismarck, ND with her parents due to a bout with spinal meningitis. She was raised on the family farm near Esmond, ND, the oldest of 6 children. Carol attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND from 1955 - 1957, where she studied home economics with a focus on sewing. While there, she met Merwin Thompson, who was living and working across the river in Breckenridge, MN. Carol and Merwin Thompson were married on July 29, 1957 in Fergus Falls, MN. The couple lived in Breckenridge, MN for two years before returning to the family farm for one year. In 1962 they moved to Rochester. Carol was a homemaker and also worked for Ability Building Center in the 1980's. She has resided at Golden Living Center - Whitewater, in St. Charles, MN for the past ten years. Her husband died in June 2008.
Survivors include three daughters: Kathy (Nick) Laqua of Wanamingo, MN; Linda (Ramon) Medina of Greeley, CO; and Mary Blake of Prescott, AZ; two sons: Jamie (Theresa) Thompson of Loveland, CO and Alan (Mandy McLaughlin) Thompson of Viola, MN; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; her sister, Constance (James) Dunkelberger of Tacoma, WA; four brothers, William S. (Betty) Preuss of Livingston, CA; Gerald (Sharon) Preuss of Grand Forks, ND; Loren (Gloria) Preuss of Esmond, ND; and Ronald (Cheri) Preuss of Texas, and her mother's youngest sister, Carol Ann Akerberg Monson of Williston, ND. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Kermit, a son, Paul, her parents, a grandson, Alex "Herm" Laqua, and her husband, Merwin.
Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens following the visitation. Memorials are suggested to Evangel United Methodist Church.
