Carl L. Runge, 89 of Pine Island died Saturday November 28, 2009 at the Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center, where he had resided for the past 9 months.

The funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 PM, Tuesday December 1, 2009 at the Douglas United Methodist Church in Douglas. Pastor Rick Phillips will be officiating. The visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Monday November 30, at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Pine Island Cemetery following the service.

Carl Lloyd Runge was born on July 2, 1920 to Otto and Tressie (nee Stafford) Runge in New Haven Township, Olmsted County, MN. He attended school at the New Haven Country School. He married Evelyn May Moulton on April 16, 1941. He and his wife farmed on the family farm, where he was born. He also worked 18 years for the Minnesota Cheese Producers and Land O' Lakes, Inc. in Pine Island. Before retirement, Carl had a great love for the family farm and being outside in the country. He loved to hunt and fish. Carl was well known for being excellent marksman with his .22 caliber handgun. He also enjoyed hunting raccoon and coyote with hounds. In 1984 he caught the largest trout in White Water, it weighed 8 pounds and 5 ounces and he was awarded a trophy by Mauer Bros. Inc. in Elba, MN. His catch took second place in the Minneapolis Star Tribune Fishing Classic, winning several prizes. He had a knack for and enjoyed repairing things around the house for his family and relatives.

Carl is survived by his son, Larry (Vicky) Runge of Pine Island; 2 daughters, Kay (Brad) Swarthout of Kasson and Mary (Art) Kaul of Oronoco; 7 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn, and his 2 sisters, Edith and Ivaleen.

Casketbearers will be Brent Runge, Coltan Runge, Joe Swarthout, Tim Skog, Brian Kaul, and Jacob Kaul.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Fairview Care Center for the excellent care given to Carl.
