Betty Smith

March 23, 1923 — August 25, 2014

Betty Smith, 91, of Lake City, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 at High Street House Assisted Living Center in Lake City. She was born March 24, 1923 in Plainview, Minn. to Earl and Adeline (Christianson) Carpenter. She attended Winona Teacher's College where she earned her teaching degree. She taught in the Mazeppa, Princeton and Lake City school districts. On June 18, 1949 she married Marlin Smith in Red Wing. From 1967 to 1986 she worked as a librarian for the Lake City Public Library and from 1973 to 1986 she served as the director. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, Bible School, was a member of the altar guild and WELCA. She was also a member of the Lake City Heritage Commission, the Lake City Historical Society and a member of Friends of the Library. She also volunteered with the Lake City Campfire Girls. Betty loved to travel with friends and together they went across the United States, Canada and Europe. She was also active in a local book club and bridge club. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by son, Gary (Val) Smith of Lake City, daughters, Marsha (Todd) VanHatten of Hastings and Chris (Mike) Furney of Savage; four grandchildren, Carly and Michael Furney and Anna and Zoë Van Hatten.
She is preceded in death by her husband Marlin.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 28, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Lake City with Reverend Duane Holst officiating. Friends may call on the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel, Lake City and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to High Street House Assisted Living. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
