Betty Alice Shanks

Betty A. Shanks, age 78, of Pine Island, died on Monday, August 20, 2012 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester after a battle with cancer. She was born on August 21, 1933, in Spring Valley, the daughter of Julia (Rustad) and Grant Briggs. She grew up and attended country school in Spring Valley. Betty married Roland Shanks and they later divorced. She worked at St. Marys Hospital as a cook for many years, Pine Island American Legion, and Pine Island School as a cook where she retired. Betty was a member of the Pine Island American Legion Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, trips to the casino, crossword puzzles, cooking, and baking. She also enjoyed spending time with family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Vicky (Ken) Kramer of Pine Island, Pamela (Brian) Wilson of Pine Island, Dawn (Thomas Reichert) White of Brandon, SD; son, Randy Shanks of West Concord; grandchildren, Jason Holmes, Nicole (Mya Amberman) Holmes, Sara (Mike Peters) Holmes, Jenna (Todd Zimmerman) Kramer, Kari Beth Wilson, Kaycee Wilson, Desirae (Steven) Sagdalen, Jeremy (Amy Rahlf) White; Rylee Shanks, McKayla Shanks; great-grandchildren, Devin Fitzgerald, Jacob Holmes, Jaden Holmes, Caitlin Karpas - Holmes, Kenzie Zimmerman, Aleaya Zimmerman, Kinslea Edstrom, Weston Sagdalen; brothers, Julian (Marion) Briggs of Spring Valley, and Roger (Kathy) Briggs of Racine, MN.

Betty was preceded in death by her grandson, Chad Michael Wilson; great-grandsons, Caleb Karpas -Holmes, Jordan Holmes; six brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August, 23, 2012 at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island with Chaplain Carol Shaffer officiating.
