Betty Lou Ramthun

January 16, 1944 — January 27, 2017

Betty Lou Ramthun, 73, of Goodhue, died as the result of a car accident on Friday, January 27, 2017. She was the oldest of four, born January 16, 1944 in Hayfield to Phillip and Irene (Distad) Hovey. She attended school in Rochester before moving to Byron where she graduated in 1962. She met her husband while in high school and on June 14, 1963 she married Daniel Ramthun. She worked as a lab technician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester until Dan got a job in Goodhue as a police officer. Together they raised four children. For nearly 35 years she worked as a teacher's aide in the Kindergarten class room, first for Mrs. Johnson and later, Mrs. Doden. She was also a school bus driver for O'Reilly Bus Garage. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and her faith was deeply important to her. She was also a member of the Monday Card Group at the Third Place and also look forward to the monthly Retiree's Breakfast. She enjoyed pontoon rides, fishing for walleye, going to the swamp, Bear Camp and was always excited to listen to her children's and grandchildren's hunting stories. Betty enjoyed traveling with family for the grandchildren's sporting events to North Carolina, Boston, and Canada. She also traveled to Europe to visit her son. She was deeply patriotic and was proud of the many police officers and service members in her family. Betty was kind, caring and selfless. She dedicated her life to caring for others, whether it be her husband, her children and grandchildren or the little ones in the classroom.
Betty will be missed by many, including her husband of 53 years, Dan; four children, Brad (Sara) of Eagan, Brian (Jean) of Grasston, Brandon (Lara) of Goodhue and Danielle (Tom) Diercks of Ellsworth, Wisc.; 12 grandchildren, Brady, Nate, Taylor, Dean Wolkenhauer, David, Dan, Kyle, Dylan, Dani (Dave) Klindworth, Cass, Mariah Diercks and Kenzie Diercks; sister, Bonnie (Maynard) Christenson; brother, Ken (Linda) Hovey; sister-in-law, Jane Keehn; many nieces, nephews, other family, friends and nearly 35 years of Goodhue students.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Kevin Jon Hovey; infant sister, Virginia Lucille and her parents.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017 at St. Luke Lutheran Church with Reverend Regina Hassanally officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, February 3 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home in Red Wing and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
