A memorial service for Betty Nelson will be held Thursday October 19th at 11:00 AM at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel. The Rev. Paul Moody will officiate. Burial of the urn will occur at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Mrs. Nelson, 86, of Rochester, and formerly of Eau Claire, died Sunday October 15, 2017 at Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th in Rochester, where she had resided the past few years.
Betty Marvella Karlen was born March 3, 1931, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Karlen. Raised in Stanley, she lived in Wisconsin and eventually settled in Eau Claire. She married Wallace "Wally" Nelson on April 26, 1952 in Stanley. Betty was a cosmetologist and hairdresser, and also taught at the IBA College of Cosmetology in Eau Claire. In retirement, she and her husband moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 2005. She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Rochester.
She is survived by her son, Alan (Karen) Nelson of Trego, Wisconsin; a daughter Nancy (Paul) Newton of Rochester, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Jesse (Brittney) Nelson, Camay (Joshua) Caturia, David Newton, and Carly (Michael) Osmera; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eugenia Voytovich of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Valvagene Sobo of Perry, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wally in 2007; a son Donald Nelson; and two brothers William and Clyde Karlen. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her step-mother Anna Karlen.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. If so desired, memorials may be directed to the Mayo Clinic Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease. Online tributes are being welcomed, and may be written at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
