Betty Phyllis Johnson

February 17, 1924 — June 8, 2013

Betty Phyllis Johnson, 89, of Red Wing, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Seminary Home. She was born February 17, 1924 in Wadena, Minnesota, daughter of Julius Frederick and Blanche R. (Bounds) Koplin. For the first couple years of her childhood, Betty lived in Brainerd, but then moved to Rochester. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1942 and then attended the Rochester School of Business for one year. She also attended Dunwoody Institute of Machinists School and worked as a machinist, welding during WWII. On July 29, 1944 she married Calvin Johnson in Rochester. The couple lived in various places including Owatonna before moving to Red Wing in 1947 when they purchased and opened Corner Grocery. Calvin died on January 9, 1992. Betty was a member of the First Covenant Church and Mary Morning Circle. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

She is survived by three sons, Mike (Kathy) Johnson of Red Wing, Gary (Donna) Johnson of Holcombe, Wis. and Brian (Pam) Johnson of Red Wing; one daughter, JoAnn (David) Dammann of Red Wing; 12 grandchildren; three great grandchildren, Avi Kae Johnson, Kroix Johnson, and Carter Johnson; one brother, Bob (Vivian) Koplin of Red Wing; three sisters, Belva (Harvey) Fiala of Austin, Norma (Don) Fimon of Rochester, and Nancy (Gordon) Robinson of Red Wing. She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Velma Yetter; one granddaughter, Alyssa Johnson and one great granddaughter, Caitlin Marie Johnson.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at First Covenant Church with Reverend Timothy Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Casketbearers will be grandchildren, Chris, Nathan (Missy), Adam, Ryan, Brad, Kelsey, Cal, Courtney and Sam Johnson and Joshua, Jonathan and Matthew Dammann. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the First Covenant Church or donors choice. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
