Betty Jo Grothe age 61 of Zumbrota passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017 at her home. The memorial service will be Friday, December 15, at 11:00 AM at Dale Lutheran Church with Pastor Heather Culuris officiating. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 14, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Betty Jo Grothe was born on June 11, 1956 in Zumbrota, MN to Joseph H. and Mildred I. (Dale) Grothe. She grew up in rural Wanamingo, attended Wanamingo Schools and graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1974. Betty Jo attended Waldorf College for two years and finished her schooling at Mankato State College, earning her Accounting Degree in 1978. She worked briefly for AMPI in New Ulm and then worked as a tax auditor for the State of Minnesota for 27 ½ years. Betty Jo helped people with their income taxes and worked for several other companies after retiring from her state job. Betty Jo was an active member of the community, served on the City Council for many years, and was active with Zumbrota Community Band, Zumbrota Park Board, Library Board and the Zoning and Planning Commission. She was Homecoming Queen and Miss Congeniality in the Dairy Princess Contest in 1974. Betty Jo was active the Charlies Softball teams, Added Touch Singers, Clown Club and coached youth girls basketball. Betty Jo enjoyed going to the cabin, attending sporting events, playing the trumpet, soloing at weddings, and attending any family function.
Betty Jo is survived by her sisters, Luanna "Tudy" (Charles) Olson of Wanamingo and Janet (Bradley) Munson of Cannon Falls; sister-in-law, Lucy Grothe of Lake City; nieces and nephews, Ryan (Dina) Olson, Bret (Jennifer) Olson, Tara (Chuck) Miller, Jon Grothe, David Quam, Mike, Mark (Amie) and Matt (Lucretia) Jackson, Lila and Lola Munson; many great nieces and nephews and her cat Pumpkin.
Betty Jo was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Gregory and Joseph D. Grothe.
Memorials are preferred to Paws and Claws.
Betty Jo's family requests that people attending the memorial service wear any sporting team jerseys that represent Minnesota teams. No "PACKERS" jerseys allowed.
