Betty Erickson

October 1, 1920 — August 23, 2016

Betty Jane Nielsen Erickson, 95, of Red Wing died on August 23, 2016 at St. Crispin Living Community in Red Wing. She was born in WI in 1920, the eldest of four children of Dagmar and John Nielsen. She graduated from Evanston (IL) Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and married Irving W. Erickson that year. They lived in Chicago, where Betty was a public health nurse, and Irv served in the US Navy. Following the war, they lived in WI, then Rockford IL, raising three children, Tom Erickson of Red Wing, Susan (Coyn) Richardson of Sarasota FL, and David Erickson of Lone Rock WI. In the 1980s, they fulfilled a long-time dream of retiring to a lake home in northern WI. They moved to Red Wing in 1994. Irving died in 1999. Betty enjoyed writing, and checking a nearby valley with family each year to see and share her love for wildflowers. In addition to three children, Betty is survived by grandchildren Claire, Jill, Meghan, Mary, Kate, Kira, and Maia, plus great grandchildren Finnegan, Andrew, Seamus, Kathleen, Thomas, Benjamin, Claire, Elena, Sylvia, Caroline, and Calvin. Betty was a quilter at United Lutheran Church where she was a member since 1994. She loved playing rummy tile and had a great afternoon doing so last week. Her favorite charity was always the Hope Coalition in Red Wing. A memorial service will be on Thursday, September 1, at 11 am at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
