Betty Jean Berg (95) of Pine Island, MN died February 12, 2022. She was born on July 11, 1926 in Rochester, MN to the parents of Gerald Allen and Margarette Allen (Pollock). She grew up during the Great Depression. While her parents worked, she was in charge of raising her two brothers, cooking meals and doing chores. She went to Hawthorn Elementary in Rochester until the 6th grade, and then to a country school in Genoa, MN. During 9th and 10th grade, she worked for a family doing chores and she took care of a little boy for room and board while attending Central High School in Rochester. She completed the 11th grade at Pine Island High School.
Betty married Palmer Berg on August 27, 1944. They spent their lives on a dairy farm in Roscoe Township, also raising chickens, turkeys and capons. Betty made large dinners and would take lunch out to the fields during the busy times. She taught her six children to be self-sufficient and instilled in them a powerful work ethic. She was active in 4-H, loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. Card making was her passion. Every holiday Betty would make cards for each resident at Pine Haven Care Center and include a handmade craft item or treat. She was a member of Lands Lutheran Church and very active in Ladies Aid and Circle. She taught Sunday School and Confirmation and her faith became a stronghold for her and she would do her “bible study” every morning and night.
