Bernice Johanna Schumacher

March 17, 1923 — October 1, 2013

Bernice Schumacher of Lake City - 1923-2013.
Mom passed peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on October 1, 2013. She was an amazing woman, a wonderful mother, a devoted wife, a grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. She made life fun. Before her death she made sure that family birthday and Christmas cards were completed for the year. Mom always wanted to be a teacher; she was a natural. She taught us many things.. .and in the end she showed us how to die with dignity, grace and faith.
Her life was not easy - there were many disappointments and heartaches along with a lot of hard work, but she got up every morning, put one foot in front of the other and did what needed to be done. She did not complain.
Her life was also filled with many joys. She loved ballroom dancing. She never tired of a drive in the country or a trip around Lake Pepin. Mom enjoyed doing a variety of handicrafts including woodworking, sewing, crocheting, and making all-occasion cards. She took great pleasure in the outdoors and caring for her gardens. After she retired, she travelled to Germany and to several states. She always looked forward to spending time with her many dear friends. She was an active member of the Lincoln Ladies Aid, the Lincoln Birthday Club, the Widows Club and several other card clubs. For the past five years she celebrated her March 17 birthday at Pepin Plaza by serving green beer instead of the usual coffee at 8:00 in the morning.
Above all, Mom was proud of her family. She was excited about each new addition, especially the five sets of twins. Family gatherings were important to her. She was the leader of our Pseudo-sisters group. She cheered us on at the Dirty Girl Mud Run in 2012. She was often the first to arrive at our monthly breakfasts. During her last days she continued to make memories with us by going on the Pedal Pub on August 3rd and to the ranch rodeo on August 11th. Mom's sense of humor never waned; we had many great "last" laughs. Knowing that she was ready for the final step in this life and that she welcomed it, comforts us now. We will forever cherish our memories of her.
We love you, Mom. You're home. Rest in peace and God bless.
