Bernard Thomas Connaughton

Bernard Thomas Connaughton, 54, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly Friday, May 3, 2013 at his home. He was born August 20, 1958, to Patrick and Mary Jo (Scott) Connaughton in Galway, Ireland. Bernard grew up on a farm in Kilrickle where he became a skilled horseman and talented jockey. Later he attended vocational school in Loughrea, Ireland before learning a trade as a butcher. In 1984 he immigrated to America where he settled in Boston. There he met Susan Fellman and the two were married on January 26, 1986. Later the couple moved to Marshfield, Wis. where their three children were born. In 1994 he moved with his family to Red Wing where he worked various jobs in the community, the last ten years with Walmart. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph as well as the Knights of Columbus, Redman Club and participated in the Red Wing Irish. He volunteered his time with many organizations, including St. Joseph's and Twin Bluff schools, coached soccer and was part of the Green Thumb Team at church. He enjoyed gardening and was always proud of his tomatoes. He was a sports fan with a particular love for the Packers and the Aces and always had a joke to tell. He looked forward to his frequent trips back to Ireland where he enjoyed watching hurling and visiting with friends and family and catching up on the local gossip.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Sue; his three children, Seamus, Shannon and Aimee, all of Red Wing; five brothers, John (Rosaleen) of Cork, Ireland, Michael (Carmel) of Castlebar, Ireland, Pat (Carmel) of Kilrickle, Ireland, Bob (Bernadette) of Longford, Ireland and Kevin (Martina) of New Inn, Ireland; one sister, Rosemary of Peterswell, Ireland; many nieces and nephews as well as loving family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Resurrection will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Church of St. Joseph, with Father Thomas Walker presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Red Wing. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church.
