Berdell Elaine Eastlund, 87, of Red Wing, died Tuesday Feb 11 at home, after a brief battle with cancer.
Berdell was born October 23, 1926 in Goodhue to Theodore and Mildred (Oelkers) Zemke, as the first of seven children. The family lived above the abandoned General Store in White Willow. She attended High School for one year in Goodhue and graduated from RWHS in 1944. She married Carroll (Cal) Eastlund in 1946 at United Lutheran Church. They have resided continuously in Red Wing.
Berdell worked at St. James Hotel, Ferrin's, William Christianson Law Office, and Goodhue County National Bank (now Associated Bank). She enjoyed gardening, nature, friends, book clubs, and bridge. Her passion was volunteering and doing social work. She is a past Red Wing Volunteer of the Year, and Woman of the Year. She served on numerous boards, and was involved in many charitable organizations.
Berdell is survived by her husband, Cal, one son, Lon (Nancy) Eastlund of Honolulu, Hawaii; two grandchildren Joshua (Gwen) Eastlund of Bellingham, Wash. and Zachary (Kristen) Eastlund of Iowa City, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Leif and Henrik; four sisters, Arline Anderson of Ellsworth, Elaine Jorgensen, Lorry (Arlie) Anderson and Marian (Ron) Tesdall all of Red Wing and one brother Gary (Holly) Zemke, of Durham, North Carolina along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Orlin Zemke.
Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Saturday Feb. 15 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Memorials are preferred to the Kiwanis Flower Basket Fund, the Mayo Clinic RW Hospice, or donors' choice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
