Barbara Jean Steffenhagen, 84, of Red Wing, died Saturday, February 17, 2024, at St. Crispin Living Community in Red Wing, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 4, 1939, in Red Wing to Louis and Melvina (Peterson) Gehrke. She was baptized and confirmed at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and attended Red Wing Schools. She married Kenneth Quade on September 8, 1956. They later divorced. On April 22, 1972, she was united in marriage to Burton Steffenhagen in Sioux Falls, SD. She worked at Nybo's, Mid-Co, the Driftwood Restaurant and then for 19 years at the St. James Hotel, as hostess at the Veranda, retiring in 2006. She was a member of United Lutheran Church and Al-Anon She enjoyed traveling, looking forward to her yearly trips to Grand Rapids, Minnesota and going to Colorado to see family. She had a collection of butterfly ornaments which were dear to her. Playing euchre was a fun pastime along with being an avid Twins fan. Most importantly was her family, especially her grandchildren that she truly adored.
Barb is survived by four children, Arnie Quade of Red Wing, Dawn (David) Kugler of Colorado Springs, CO, Becky (Ron) Beissel of Hampton and Roberta (Jon) Hauschildt of Red Wing; one step daughter, Lynn (Randy) Anderson of Eau Claire, WI; eight grandchildren, Alyssa Kirkpatrick and Andrew Kugler, Kimberly Rupe, Steven Stewart, Brittany Fortier, Abby Beissel and Jennifer Hauschildt and Rachel Hauschildt; five great grandchildren, Brianna and Natalie Rupe, Harlee Fortier, Emma Kugler and Ryker Kirkpatrick; one brother, George (Diane) Gehrke of Vermillion, MN; two sisters, Sharon (Kenny) Vieths of Kenyon and Nancy (Richard) Paton of Lake City along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burton in 1988 and one sister, Charlotte Wohlers.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2024, at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
