August "Augie" Zellmer, 95, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at his home at Deercrest. He was born in Roberts County, South Dakota, on August 8, 1920, to Frank and Else Zellmer, one of 10 children. The family settled north of Spooner, Wisconsin, where Augie helped carve out a farm out of the forest behind a team of horses. He worked in the CCC and WPA and enlisted in the Army Reserve, which resulted in a Pacific cruise to take part in the first deployment of US ground forces in WW II in Papua, New Guinea with the Army 128th Div. for which he received the Bronze Star. Attending the U. of Wisconsin, Madison, he met and married Bonita Dych on August 28, l948, and obtained a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1949. He worked as a packaging design engineer for several companies including Doboy Packaging in New Richmond, Wis. He and Bonnie retired to Bella Vista, AR in 1985 where he enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf. He also did volunteer work at Habitat for Humanity and worked many years at the Bella Vista recycling center. While living in Bella Vista, he was a member of the United Lutheran Church, the Men's Golf League, the neighborhood leagues, the Jelly Bellies and the Duffers, and also enjoyed playing bridge.
Augie was known for his wry sense of humor and his love of singing, recalling songs from his youth. He was the handyman of the extended family, toting his toolbox on all family vacations.
His wife, Bonnie, to whom he was married for 58 years, preceded him in death on July 23, 2006. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Jakubowski, of Portland, Oregon, one son, Mark of Tucson, Arizona, one son and daughter-in-law, David and Valery Zellmer of Norfolk, Virginia, and one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Michael Christensen of Red Wing, Minnesota. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jason Jakubowski of Baltimore, Maryland, and Max and Alex Christensen of Red Wing, MN; he is survived by two sisters and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Augie will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2016 at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with a visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Cure Alzheimer's Fund, http://www.curealz.org
