Arvid Paul Johnson

Arvid Paul Johnson, 96, of Pine Island, formerly of Red Wing and Shoreview, died Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island. He was born March 31, 1917 to Paul and Emma (Peterson) Johnson in Trenton Township, Wis. He grew up in the Moeville, Wis. area where he attended rural school until the 8th grade. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in Los Alamos, New Mexico until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He moved to Eureka, Cal. where he worked for the Venetian Blind Company. In 1947, he married Vivian Ross in Eureka, Cal. The couple later returned to Red Wing where Arvid worked for Red Wing Pottery for many years. In 1968, they moved to Shoreview where he worked at the Twin Cities Arsenal and he later worked security for the IDS Tower until he retired. Vivian died on December 25, 2003. Arvid enjoyed fishing and sports. He read often, and particularly enjoyed reading books on history. He was very musically gifted and enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. Most of all, he loved taking trips to the cabin with Vivian and spending time with his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Brenda (Eldon) Skurdahl of Pine Island; three grandchildren, Benjamin Skurdahl of Pine Island, Sally (Michael) Tripp of Sand Diego, Cal. and Michael Skurdahl; two great-grandchildren, Nikolas and Chloe Skurdahl.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Vivian; one sister, Mildred (Allan) Smith; and special cousins, Roland, Mark and Melvin Hilden.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Bethel Moeville Covenant Church in rural Ellsworth, Wis with Rev. Greg Fondell officiating. Burial is to follow at Bethel Covenant Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church
