Arthur E. Von Helmst age 98 of Lake City passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Lake City Nursing Home.
Art was born August 23, 1912 in Lake City to George & Katherine (Betcher) Von Helmst. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Lake City in 1930. He then attended the University of Minnesota. Art joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and served for 10 months. In November of 1943 he enlisted in the army and served during WW II and was discharged in February of 1946. He married Dorothy Masters on July 22, 1944 in Texarkana, Arkansas. They lived in Lake City after he was discharged from the Army. He worked as a Supervisor at Federal Mogul in Lake City for 40 years until retiring in 1974. Art then worked at the Lake City Country Club from 1974 to 1988. His wife Dorothy passed away in 1991. Art was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Lake City. He was an avid golfer, bicyclist and bowler.
Art is survived by a son Michael (Hazel) Von Helmst of Leland, North Carolina and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, a sister Marian Jostock and a brother Harold Von Helmst.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City with Rev Daniel Kroll officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Lake City. Friends may call one Hour before the service at the church. Military rites will be conducted by the Lake City VFW Post #8729 and American Legion Post #110.
