Arleigh A. Zemke age 77 of Zumbrota died on Wednesday, June 03, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue with Reverend Andy Krause officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2009 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arleigh Arthur Zemke was born on June 13, 1931 in Goodhue Township, Goodhue County, MN to Arthur and Jeanette (nee Mehrkens) Zemke. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school and Grace Parochial School. Arleigh started farming with his father. On June 23, 1951 he married Lois Reese at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue. He entered the U.S. Army on August 18, 1953 and served during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge on June 14, 1955, they returned to the Zumbrota area. They purchased a farm in Zumbrota Township and farmed there until the early 2000's, when they retired. Arleigh was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and on the Grace Parochial School Board. He also served on the Zumbrota Public School Board, was a Mid-America Delegate, Farm Bureau member, an election judge and won the Top Soil Conservationist award in 1962-63. Arleigh enjoyed woodworking, fixing and making things, playing cards, dancing and attending his children and grandchildren's activities. Arleigh is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters, Wanda (Alan) Hadler and Mary (Kevin) Smith, both of Zumbrota; two sons, James (Debrah) Zemke of Zumbrota and David (Julie) Zemke of Rochester; eighteen grandchildren, Jeremy Hadler, Michelle (Josh) Janovitz, Joel (Amanda) Hadler, Cindy (Pastor Nathan) Wilke, Rebecca and Ross Hadler, Nathan (Jenny) Smith, Matthew (Kristi) Smith, Andrea Smith, Michael (Tammy) Smith, Jordan and Joanna Smith, Ryan (fiancé Marcella Thumann) Zemke, Amanda Zemke, Brandon and Adam Zemke, Jessica and Jackie Zemke; seven great grandchildren, Gray, Evan, Hans, Lydia, Naomi, Haley, and Aubrey; one sister, Lois Allers of Lake City and one brother, Orville (Joan) Zemke of Goodhue. The family suggests memorials to Leukemia Society, Parkinson's Research or Grace Lutheran Church.
